What an EMI typically enables

Electronic money institutions (EMIs) issue e-money against funds received—powering wallets, prepaid balances, and closed-loop or open-loop payment products under supervision. Architecture usually requires segregated customer funds, strong KYC, transaction monitoring, and reconciliation with banking partners.

Engineering themes we see in EMI programmes

  • Ledger with available vs settled balances and idempotent payment IDs.
  • Partner bank APIs for pay-in/pay-out and nostro reconciliation.
  • Limits, velocity checks, and STR-ready monitoring hooks.
  • Customer-facing dispute and chargeback workflows.
  • Audit trails for licence examinations and SOC-style reviews.
